This post is surprisingly easier to digest than your average post =))

What makes me scared of people calling "AI therapists" is the truth that no one would like to admit: The comforting, empathizing, soothing AI talking to us is in reality a huge machine with wires and electricity and codes, eating data and selectively blurting out what is statistically reasonable. It is neither personalized nor emotional. It doesn't even have the responsibility to talk to us—its response "I feel you" is a computed response of bits of 0 and 1, using language to appear as if it is not computed. This realization makes me sick, because by so doing AI is not unethical—it fulfills its role of generating a response.

But yes, a lot of people love this humanized face because the mechanical face is hidden. As you've written, it offers temporary placation to look at something nice, but at the end of the day it is not made to be nice.
